Description
What kind of wine it is
Sacer Sagrantino di Montefalco by Colpetrone is a red wine that embodies the authentic soul of Umbria. To the eye, it displays a deep, impenetrable red colour, which anticipates an aromatic bouquet dominated by notes of ripe red fruit and leather. On the palate, it asserts itself decisively, supported by a weave of concentrated tannins that gives it great structure and remarkable ageing potential. To fully appreciate its complexity, it is recommended to decant before tasting. Thanks to its strong identity, it is the ideal companion for roast red meats, game, and mature cheeses, enhancing dishes with rich and intense flavours.
Where it comes from
This red originates from the vineyards of Gualdo Cattaneo, a territory historically suited to the cultivation of Sagrantino. The harvest is carried out entirely by hand, with a rigorous selection of grapes from the best plots, carefully chosen for their exposure and soil characteristics. This meticulous agronomic approach allows Colpetrone to gather healthy, concentrated bunches, capable of transferring all the power of the Montefalco terroir into the glass, offering clean aromas and a solid territorial expression.
How it is produced
Production begins with a temperature-controlled maceration, accompanied by daily pump-overs and délestage to extract the maximum from the raw material. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels, where it remains in contact with the fine lees to undergo malolactic fermentation, encouraged by weekly stirring during the first six months. The maturation in wood continues for a total of twelve months, followed by a crucial bottle ageing of one year. This lengthy process allows the wine to achieve its balance and define its refined structural elegance.

Next to Sagrantino we propose Montefalco Rosso and in a few years there will also be a sensational version of Sagrantino Passito, a sweet red wine with along history that has become a true "speciality of the house". In the course of the year 2001 the investments have been increased with the acquisition of other portions of land that border Còlpetrone that will be put into use with the objective to grow steadily in quality. The present 45 acres of vineyard will become, within the year 2005, 111 to grow again to 148 within the year 2007. That makes Còlpetrone one of the more important holdings in Montefalco. Read more
