Description
What kind of wine it is
Colpetrone Sagrantino di Montefalco Passito is a sweet red wine with an enveloping profile. Its intense ruby red colour, enriched with violet highlights, introduces a bouquet of blackberry, black cherry and violet. On the palate, it confirms the fruity notes, evolving into sensations of tobacco and chocolate that enhance its structure. When served chilled, it pairs ideally with mature cheeses, dried fruit and desserts such as tarts or strudel, promising excellent ageing potential over ten to fifteen years.
Where it comes from
The label signed by Colpetrone expresses the authenticity of the Umbrian territory, originating in Marcellano di Gualdo Cattaneo. The main protagonist is the Sagrantino grape variety, whose aromatic strength is further enhanced by the drying process. Its belonging to the Montefalco Sagrantino Passito area defines the identity of this wine, where the particular soil and climate conditions result in extraordinary aromatic intensity and a strong territorial character.
How it is produced
The bunches, harvested by hand, rest on racks in controlled humidity to achieve optimal sugar concentration. Fermentation with maceration at controlled temperature allows for the extraction of colour and polyphenols. After racking, the wine matures through ageing on fine lees for about six months. This meticulous technical step consolidates the tasting structure and balances the enveloping sweet component that characterises the tasting experience.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1995 in the heart of Umbria, the Colpetrone winery enhances local traditions through its captivating Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG Passito. This fine expression of the native grape variety is crafted from hand-picked grapes that are left to wither on racks, thus concentrating sugars and aromas. Overseen by oenologists Riccardo Cotarella and Emanuele Nardi, the 2016 vintage matures for six months on fine lees, acquiring great structure. The wine expresses all the power and elegance of Sagrantino, making it ideal for enhancing the end of a meal.
