Description
What kind of wine it is
Cocito Barbaresco Baluchin Riserva is a still red wine that expresses the character of Nebbiolo with great precision. To the eye, it presents a garnet colour with good consistency, anticipating a well-defined aromatic profile in which deep and fragrant fruity and spicy notes stand out. On the palate, it offers excellent pleasantness, providing a rare combination of structure and elegance. This label is distinguished by its clear aptitude for ageing, proving to be a faithful expression of the original grape variety.
Where it comes from
This Barbaresco Riserva originates in Piedmont, in the renowned areas of Castagnole delle Lanze, in the province of Asti. It takes its name from the Baluchin vineyard, a term in the local dialect that refers to the stars, and represents the heart of the Cocito family's winemaking project. The winery chooses to vinify this cru exclusively in the best vintages, to ensure consistent quality and a strong territorial identity. The result is a Piedmontese red that fully reflects the peculiarities of the soil and the meticulous care dedicated to cultivation.
How it is produced
The production process involves malolactic fermentation followed by a slow maturation of over twenty months in medium-toast French barrels, during which periodic rackings are carried out to encourage natural clarity. The wine then rests in steel tanks before bottling, which takes place without any fining or filtration, and then matures further in glass. To best appreciate its qualities, it is recommended to decant for about an hour. At the table, it proves to be the ideal companion for flavourful dishes, pairing excellently with roasts, game and mature cheeses.
History and Curiosities
Born in 1993 from the intuition of Ezio Cocito, this Barbaresco Riserva 2016 is a masterpiece produced strictly only in vintages considered exceptional. The wine comes to life from the exclusive Baluchin vineyard, a dialect term meaning “stars”, which inspires the symbol on the label. The masterful vinification, overseen at the cellar of his friend Giorgio Rivetti of La Spinetta, seals the perfect union between passion and oenological technique. A prestigious gem, awarded an impressive 94/100 by Robert Parker and Vinous.

Ezio Cocito: "I have two passions in my life: horses and Barbaresco. It’s through these passions that Giorgio and I have become great friends. Before 1993, our family had always planted Moscato in our vineyard in Neive, but after lots of consideration and long talks with Giorgio, we decided to take out the Moscato and try our hand with Nebbiolo. That was in 1994 and in 2000 our first Barbaresco Baluchin was born. I’ve always believed that if you can’t do something right, you shouldn’t do it at all. I wasn’t sure if I could produce the quality of grapes and wine that were to my standard, so I decided to focus all of my efforts on Barbaresco. This is also why we produce our wine only in exceptional vintages." Read more
