Description

What type of wine it is

Le Lucciole by Chiara Condello is an organic red made from Sangiovese, an authentic expression of Romagna Sangiovese Predappio Riserva. On the palate, it is intense and structured, characterised by a deep mouthful and remarkable persistence. The sensory profile reveals an excellent balance, supported by a dense and firm texture. Its aromatic breadth perfectly accompanies meat-based cuisine, naturally enhancing dishes based on red meats, pork recipes and savoury mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

The vines grow on the Predappio hills, in Emilia-Romagna, at an altitude between 150 and 300 metres. The vineyards, trained using the spurred cordon method, enjoy the natural protection offered by a dense neighbouring wood. The calcareous-clay soil is poor but rich in ancient Pliocene sandstones of marine origin, known locally as Spungone. This peculiar geological matrix gives the bunches a distinct minerality, defining a clear territorial footprint consistent with the area’s identity.

How it is produced

The production process begins with a rigorous manual harvest, followed by spontaneous fermentation in wooden vats, activated exclusively by indigenous yeasts. Extraction takes place through a long maceration on the skins, ranging from twenty-five to forty-five days, an essential phase for defining the wine’s structure. Ageing continues slowly in Slavonian oak barrels to encourage development and harmony over time. It is recommended to decant the wine for about an hour before serving.

History and trivia

The organic Sangiovese Riserva created by Chiara Condello tells the authentic story of the soul of the Predappio hills. Born on the characteristic calcareous-clay soils of the Spungone, this wine reflects the philosophy of stripping away the superfluous to enhance the uniqueness of the Romagna land. Awarded the prestigious Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso, it is embellished with an artistic watercolour label that expresses a perfect harmony between oenological excellence and refined aesthetics, in a limited run of 35,000 bottles.

Chiara Condello - Le Lucciole was born from the awareness of being a keeper of a wine growing history that was written and handed down for hundreds of years in the Predappio hills and by my desire to give a revolutionary interpretation to this unique, generous land. I work following a concept: I would love to produce a wine that express the high potential of my land, releasing it from all the things that are not essential.

A Sangiovese that returns exactly my ideas of winemaking. I have chosen a little piece of land close to a forest, in the heart of the appellation Predappio, in between 150 and 300 meters above sea level. Here the vines are deeply rooted in a poor calcareous-clay soil which is rich in pliocenic sandstones called Spungone. Here 3 million years ago there was a sea, and from here I started working to produce a wine that is the expression of this uniqueness.
