Description

What kind of wine it is

Château Sociando-Mallet is a red wine with a deep profile. This Bordeaux blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc appears dark red with violet highlights. The refined bouquet reveals notes of violet, plum, blackberry and blackcurrant, with mineral nuances of graphite, subtle hints of barrel and cigar paper. On the palate, the attack is dense, marked by juicy black fruit and a lively progression. Supported by elegant acidity and silky tannins, it finishes with a penetrating finale and a pleasant bitter note.

Where it comes from

It originates in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, in the Haut-Médoc area of Bordeaux, an ideal terroir for the expressiveness of red grape varieties. Production is entrusted to Château Sociando-Mallet, an independent estate of eighty-five hectares that operates outside official classifications while maintaining absolute quality standards. The agricultural management is distinguished by HVE3 certification, guaranteeing a constant commitment to environmental sustainability and respect for the vineyard ecosystem.

How it is produced

Careful vinification enhances a very long ageing potential. To appreciate its structural finesse, a preliminary decanting of one or two hours is recommended. Served between sixteen and eighteen degrees, this fleshy red pairs masterfully with main courses. It finds the perfect match alongside meat stews, game, poultry and mature cheeses, accompanying intense flavours with impeccable balance on the palate.

History and Curiosities

Renamed in 1850 by Madame Mallet, the widow, Château Sociando-Mallet stands as a rebellious masterpiece of the Médoc. Since 1969, Jean Gautreau has elevated the 85 hectares of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne to a level of prestige that proudly shines outside the official classifications. This 2021 vintage, awarded 93 points by James Suckling and 91 by Robert Parker, embodies an Haut-Médoc of exceptional harmony. A sustainable wine, HVE3 certified, capable of rivalling the most renowned labels thanks to its profound Bordeaux expressiveness.

The Chateau Sociando Mallet winery was created by Jean Gautreau in 1969. In his youth, Jean had dedicated himself to the sale of low-cost Bordeaux wines to be exported to Africa. The business went well and when in Bordeaux wine prices rose sharply in 1956, it decided to turn to richer and more profitable countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands. The real turning point of his life took place in 1969 when Jean, seeking an estate on behalf of a Belgian client, discovered the Chateau Sociando Mallet in the commune of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, north of Pauillac, in full Medoc; The vineyard does not exceed 5 hectares, has old plants and maltreated by previous owners, but is situated in a beautiful location on the Gironde estuary and enjoys a beautiful view over the river and the surrounding countryside, Jean falls in love with it and buys it For 250 thousand francs.
The construction is very poor, there is no cellar and there are only a few barrels in a garage, but little by little Jean begins the restoration work of the castle and the reorganization of the vineyard, and with the help of Gerard Cler, Already used in the Chateau, proclaims the first vintage, which reveals the exceptional nature of the terroir.
Today, the "Domaine" extends over 110 hectares, of which 85 are vines, 48% Sauvignon, 47% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the three vines assembled in wise proportions provide Bordaux Chateau Sociando Mallet which well represents the great wines of Medoc.
