Description

What kind of wine it is

Chateau de Lamarque Haut Medoc is a still red wine emblematic of Bordeaux. This Bordeaux blend combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, presenting in the glass with a deep, brilliant crimson colour with violet highlights. The bouquet reveals clear notes of black fruits, damson and plum, enhanced by hints of liquorice, cedar and wild berries. On the palate, it stands out for its medium-full body and vibrant acidity, maintaining a well-defined fruity core. Its smooth structure offers a sip of extraordinary balance.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the prestigious Haut-Medoc area. The estate, managed by Chateau de Lamarque, the oldest winery in the area with a thousand-year history, covers forty-eight hectares cultivated with deep respect for nature. The agronomic approach aims for perfect harmony between soil, rootstocks and grape varieties. As a member of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, the company enhances the French terroir, producing wines with remarkable ageing potential.

How it is produced

Production involves a slow vinification followed by a long ageing process, both fundamental steps to harmonise the flavour profile and ensure notable longevity over time. To fully appreciate its complexity, it is recommended to decant for one hour and serve at an ideal temperature between 14 and 16°C. At the table, it pairs excellently with roast red meats, lamb, rich stews and pork. Its innate elegance also makes it perfect with game and mature cheeses.

History and Curiosities

With almost a thousand years of history, Château de Lamarque is the oldest estate in the Médoc and a true symbol of Bordeaux excellence. Its forty-eight hectares in the Haut-Médoc AOC appellation are cultivated with strict respect for nature and the terroir. This philosophy results in a slow vinification and a lengthy ageing process, which give rise to a majestic red wine. The 2023 vintage, awarded 90 points by Decanter, masterfully combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, offering a smooth sip enhanced by a distinct core of black fruits.

Chateau de Lamarque
From this winery
The oldest in the Médoc region, Château de Lamarque is almost a thousand years old. The family history dates back to when Garison de Lamarque built the original fortified castle between 1050 and 1090, to protect the region from Viking invasions.
Meanwhile his cousin, Gaubert de Fumel, was taking part in the Crusades. The story of the Lamarques and Fumels continues today. In fact, Georgine de Fumel, the Marchioness of Evry by way of marriage, is the grandmother of Pierre-Gilles Gromand d’Evry who today is responsible for the future of the château’s vineyard.

The vicissitudes of French history led to the family having to leave Lamarque during the Hundred Years’ War, meanwhile Henry V of England became the owner and the Duke of Gloucester became its resident (1414 to 1447). When the region was returned to French rule in 1453, the renowned Maréchal de Matignon started living at Lamarque, and it is said that he later died there from a stroke following a heavy meal with lots of wine!

The Lamarque vines have existed since the 15th century. At first, the wine was produced only for the château itself. Professor Pijassou has verified its existence and it is recorded on a map of Beylleme from this period. Following this historic ‘Renaissance’, Pierre-Gilles and Marie-Hélène Gromand brought new energy to the project by rethinking the basics: respecting nature, ensuring that the quality of the grape varieties and their rootstock are adapted to the soil, and a slow wine making process with a long maturation period. They are the 25th generation from this family’s long story and the 7th generation to look after a vineyard in this exceptional 48-hectare estate, carrying the Haut-Médoc appellation, the regional appellation incorporating smaller communal appellations. Today, Château de Lamarque is a member of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux.
