Description

What kind of wine it is

Chateau de Lamarque Haut-Medoc is a still red wine that embodies the essence of the Bordeaux region. This structured blend is created from the union of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, offering a harmonious profile. Visually, it displays a deep ruby hue with bright garnet highlights. On the nose, it reveals a complex bouquet, dominated by red and black fruits, enriched with notes of fine spices, cedarwood and delicate toasted hints. On the palate, it is broad and enveloping, supported by integrated tannins that lead to a persistent finish, enhancing the typical character of the French terroir.

Where it comes from

This label originates in France, in the prestigious Haut-Medoc area, where the dedicated soils impart a distinctive character. The producer, Chateau de Lamarque, manages an estate with a thousand-year history. The approach in the vineyards is based on the utmost respect for nature, with meticulous selection of varieties according to the composition of the soil. This careful management allows for a wine that faithfully reflects the nuances of the appellation, maintaining a solid and well-regarded quality.

How it is produced

Production follows a slow vinification to gently extract colour and aromas, followed by maturation in barrels which refines and enriches the structure. This process gives the wine its typical smoothness and remarkable ability to evolve over time. To best appreciate its organoleptic qualities, it is recommended to decant for about an hour before serving. At the table, it proves to be the ideal companion for roast red meats, lamb, game and mature cheeses.

History and Curiosities

The Château de Lamarque is an estate with almost a thousand years of history in the heart of Bordeaux. The prestigious 2015 vintage, awarded 90 points by Decanter, embodies the authentic tradition of great Bordeaux wines, offering timeless elegance.

From this winery
The oldest in the Médoc region, Château de Lamarque is almost a thousand years old. The family history dates back to when Garison de Lamarque built the original fortified castle between 1050 and 1090, to protect the region from Viking invasions.
Meanwhile his cousin, Gaubert de Fumel, was taking part in the Crusades. The story of the Lamarques and Fumels continues today. In fact, Georgine de Fumel, the Marchioness of Evry by way of marriage, is the grandmother of Pierre-Gilles Gromand d’Evry who today is responsible for the future of the château’s vineyard.

The vicissitudes of French history led to the family having to leave Lamarque during the Hundred Years’ War, meanwhile Henry V of England became the owner and the Duke of Gloucester became its resident (1414 to 1447). When the region was returned to French rule in 1453, the renowned Maréchal de Matignon started living at Lamarque, and it is said that he later died there from a stroke following a heavy meal with lots of wine!

The Lamarque vines have existed since the 15th century. At first, the wine was produced only for the château itself. Professor Pijassou has verified its existence and it is recorded on a map of Beylleme from this period. Following this historic ‘Renaissance’, Pierre-Gilles and Marie-Hélène Gromand brought new energy to the project by rethinking the basics: respecting nature, ensuring that the quality of the grape varieties and their rootstock are adapted to the soil, and a slow wine making process with a long maturation period. They are the 25th generation from this family’s long story and the 7th generation to look after a vineyard in this exceptional 48-hectare estate, carrying the Haut-Médoc appellation, the regional appellation incorporating smaller communal appellations. Today, Château de Lamarque is a member of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux.
