Description

What kind of wine it is

Pomino Vinsanto by Frescobaldi is a sweet white dessert wine, made from a blend of Trebbiano, Malvasia Toscana and San Colombano grapes. On the nose, it reveals clear aromas of dried apricot and fig, enriched by hints of walnuts, honey, vanilla and gingerbread. On the palate, the soft and enveloping texture is perfectly balanced by a vivid freshness, offering a harmonious sip that culminates in a warm and persistent finish.

Where it comes from

This passito is produced at the Castello di Pomino estate, located north-east of Florence, within the boundaries of the Pomino denomination. The vineyards are cultivated on hillsides reaching almost seven hundred metres above sea level, where the cool and constantly breezy microclimate preserves the natural acidity of the grapes. These climatic conditions impart a marked elegance to the product, ensuring great gustatory dynamism to this complex meditation wine.

How it is produced

The production process is based on the passito method, which involves slowly drying the grapes in special rooms to concentrate sugars and aromas. Once fermentation is complete, the wine matures for seven years in small caratelli, traditional oak barrels that broaden its aromatic and flavour profile. The lengthy ageing gives it a broad structure, making it ideal to pair with blue cheeses, dry pastries or to accompany an aperitif with foie gras.

History and Curiosities

Produced at the Castello di Pomino in Rufina, this prestigious Vin Santo Pomino DOC embodies the noble Tuscan tradition of the nineteenth century. The Frescobaldi family, named Winery of the Year 2020 by Gambero Rosso, cultivates its vineyards up to 700 metres above sea level to ensure exceptional finesse. After careful drying, the 2018 vintage rests for 7 years in small oak casks, giving rise to a fascinating meditation wine that celebrates the excellence of a winemaking history that began as far back as the 1400s.

Castello Pomino is a hidden treasure among the Frescobaldi estates. It reveals itself to those who pass through the first woods of the Florentine mountains, with vines climbing to an altitude of 700 metres.

The castle dates back to the 1500s and is well-known for its excellent location. However, the most significant testimony dates back to 1716, when Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici identified the four most suitable territories in Tuscany for producing Quality Wines.

The document, considered the forerunner of modern DOCs, lists the Pomino land along with Chianti, Carmignano and Val d'Arno di Sopra.

Since that date, the wines of Castello Pomino have won many awards: they were awarded in 1873 at the Universal Exhibition in Vienna and in 1878 won the Gold Medal at the Paris Expo, the highest international recognition at the time.

Today, Castello Pomino still stands for Tuscan winemaking tradition, combined with a desire to innovate and expert know-how. Brightness and minerality for a signature Tuscan wine.
