Description

What kind of wine it is

Benefizio Pomino Bianco Riserva by Frescobaldi is a still white wine that expresses the essence of Pomino. Made entirely from Chardonnay grapes, this wine reveals a structured and savoury sensory profile. The floral bouquet opens with notes of orange blossom, magnolia and broom, accompanied by clear citrus and candied fruit aromas. On the palate, it shows an excellent balance between freshness and smoothness, finishing with a persistent aftertaste enriched by hints of dried fruit.

Where it comes from

This high-altitude white originates from the Castello di Pomino estate, located in the heart of the Rufina area. The vineyards are situated at considerable altitudes on predominantly sandy soil, which ensures excellent water management. The cool climate, with harsh winters and breezy summers, allows the Chardonnay to achieve slow and balanced ripening. These soil and climate characteristics give the wine a pronounced mineral note and a vibrancy that enhances the purity of the fruit.

How it is produced

Production begins with a careful manual harvest, followed by gentle pressing to extract a clear must through cold settling. Alcoholic fermentation and partial malolactic fermentation take place in oak barrels, some new and some first-passage, to add complexity while preserving the integrity of the grape variety. The wine then matures in wood in contact with the lees, where regular bâtonnage enhances its aromatic depth before the final rest in the bottle.

History and Curiosities

Cultivated since 1855 at an altitude of 700 metres in Rufina, this majestic pure Chardonnay embodies the centuries-old expertise of the Marchesi Frescobaldi family. The legacy of the Benefizio cru is legendary: created in 1973, it stood out as the first Italian white to be fermented and aged in barrique. Produced as a Riserva since 2005, it continues the prestige of the gold medal won in Paris in 1878. The 2024 vintage now stands out with 94 points from James Suckling, confirming a timeless elegance that magnificently enhances the character of the high-altitude Tuscan terroir.

Castello Pomino is a hidden treasure among the Frescobaldi estates. It reveals itself to those who pass through the first woods of the Florentine mountains, with vines climbing to an altitude of 700 metres.

The castle dates back to the 1500s and is well-known for its excellent location. However, the most significant testimony dates back to 1716, when Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici identified the four most suitable territories in Tuscany for producing Quality Wines.

The document, considered the forerunner of modern DOCs, lists the Pomino land along with Chianti, Carmignano and Val d'Arno di Sopra.

Since that date, the wines of Castello Pomino have won many awards: they were awarded in 1873 at the Universal Exhibition in Vienna and in 1878 won the Gold Medal at the Paris Expo, the highest international recognition at the time.

Today, Castello Pomino still stands for Tuscan winemaking tradition, combined with a desire to innovate and expert know-how. Brightness and minerality for a signature Tuscan wine.

Served between 12 and 14 °C in a glass for structured white wines, this Chardonnay enhances the entire gastronomic experience. Its freshness harmoniously complements the intense flavour of baked salmon in foil, oven-baked sea bream or fine caviar. Also available in Magnum format, it pairs perfectly with refined risottos, creamy soups and medium-aged cheeses.
