Description

What kind of wine it is

Pomino Bianco by Frescobaldi is a Tuscan white wine created from a harmonious blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco. An expression of the Pomino area, it stands out for its fresh and structured style, characterised by a savoury and mineral texture. The nose reveals aromas of white flowers and citrus, with hints of green apple and pear. On the palate, it is soft and pleasantly creamy, finishing with a persistent citrusy aftertaste. The vinification alternates between stainless steel and French oak barrels to preserve maximum aromatic precision.

Where it comes from

This wine originates in Pomino, in the Tuscan territory of Rufina, at the Castello di Pomino estates. The vineyards are located at around 700 metres above sea level, immersed in a cool and breezy Apennine microclimate. This mountain influence is essential for protecting the aromatic vibrancy of the grapes, resulting in a taut sip, enhanced by freshness and a pronounced mineral imprint. In this setting, the vocation for white wines is deeply rooted, with the cultivation of Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco documented since 1855.

How it is produced

The grapes are harvested and processed with minimal contact with oxygen. A gentle pressing is carried out, aimed at a delicate extraction of the musts. Fermentation at controlled temperature takes place mostly in stainless steel tanks and partly in French oak barrels, thus imparting subtle toasted nuances and greater softness. The wine then matures for four months in steel before completing its final ageing prior to release, consolidating its harmony and persistence.

History and Curiosities

Pomino Bianco DOC originates from the historic estates of the Castello di Pomino owned by the Frescobaldi family, harmoniously blending Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco, varieties introduced to Tuscany in 1855. The vineyards, cultivated up to 700 metres above sea level, benefit from a breezy Apennine microclimate that preserves the grapes' perfect aromatic freshness. Thanks to gentle pressing and partial ageing in barriques, this elegant wine offers a savoury sip with soft creamy hints, celebrating a centuries-old tradition widely acclaimed by international critics.

Castello Pomino is a hidden treasure among the Frescobaldi estates. It reveals itself to those who pass through the first woods of the Florentine mountains, with vines climbing to an altitude of 700 metres.

The castle dates back to the 1500s and is well-known for its excellent location. However, the most significant testimony dates back to 1716, when Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici identified the four most suitable territories in Tuscany for producing Quality Wines.

The document, considered the forerunner of modern DOCs, lists the Pomino land along with Chianti, Carmignano and Val d'Arno di Sopra.

Since that date, the wines of Castello Pomino have won many awards: they were awarded in 1873 at the Universal Exhibition in Vienna and in 1878 won the Gold Medal at the Paris Expo, the highest international recognition at the time.

Today, Castello Pomino still stands for Tuscan winemaking tradition, combined with a desire to innovate and expert know-how. Brightness and minerality for a signature Tuscan wine.
