Description
What kind of wine it is
Siepi is a refined wine from Tuscany crafted by Mazzei. This blend of Merlot and Sangiovese displays a deep ruby colour and aromatic notes of wild berries, rosewood and juniper. The perfectly balanced tannins and intense structure provide a long and persistent finish on the palate, making it the ideal choice to enhance the bold flavours of stews and game.
Where it comes from
The wine originates from Fonterutoli, in the area of Castellina in Chianti. The vines benefit from a south and south-west exposure at an altitude of 260 metres, ensuring optimal ripening of the grapes. The roots delve into soils composed of alberese, a geological peculiarity that ensures a solid tannic structure and highlights the clear expression of the terroir within the historic estates of the Mazzei family.
How it is produced
Production involves manual harvesting and separate fermentation in steel for the two varieties at strictly controlled temperatures. The ageing period lasts eighteen months in small French oak barrels, mostly new. The entire process concludes with four months in cement vats, an essential step to balance the wine’s complex structure before bottling.

At Fonterutoli, as well as at Belguardo and Zisola, resides the same philosophy that aims to promote local vine varieties as an expression of the identity of the region, in respect of diversity and nature, via sustainable agriculture and improvements mindfull of the delicate hydro-geologic balance, in order to prevent soil erosion and maximize water reserves in the region. All of this in order to be able to hand the land intact to future generations.
"I like to think to our family tree as a sturdy and generous vine plant because all Mazzei's history is constantly connected to vineyards, cellars and wine." (Marchese Lapo Mazzei, Cavaliere del Lavoro) Read more
