Description
What kind of wine it is
Castello di Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vicoregio, produced by Mazzei, is a red wine that embodies the essence of the Tuscan region through a refined blend of Sangiovese. Part of the prestigious Chianti Classico Gran Selezione category, it stands out for its elegant and structured style, enriched by tannins of great finesse. The fermentation process and subsequent ageing in wood define an intense red fruit profile, offering a balanced and lively sip destined for extraordinary evolution over time.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in Tuscany, in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, within the renowned Vicoregio vineyard. It is a plot blessed by the sun of the Mazzei estate, situated at an optimal altitude for cultivating Sangiovese. The vines grow on alberese and clay soils, rich in stones, which give the wine a solid and profound structure. The excellent sun exposure ensures ideal ripening of the grapes, providing a precise flavour that enhances the tension and clear notes of small red berries.
How it is produced
Production begins with the manual harvesting of Sangiovese grapes, followed by fermentation designed to enhance the elegance of the tannins. The wine matures for eighteen months in French oak barrels, then continues ageing between large barrels and concrete vats. This production method gives a deep red colour and an aromatic bouquet of great intensity. Certified as a vegan wine, it is characterised by a finish with silky tannins and excellent ageing potential. It is ideal paired with braised meats, game and mature cheeses.
History and Curiosities

At Fonterutoli, as well as at Belguardo and Zisola, resides the same philosophy that aims to promote local vine varieties as an expression of the identity of the region, in respect of diversity and nature, via sustainable agriculture and improvements mindfull of the delicate hydro-geologic balance, in order to prevent soil erosion and maximize water reserves in the region. All of this in order to be able to hand the land intact to future generations.
"I like to think to our family tree as a sturdy and generous vine plant because all Mazzei's history is constantly connected to vineyards, cellars and wine." (Marchese Lapo Mazzei, Cavaliere del Lavoro) Read more
