Description

What kind of wine it is

Banfi Poggio alle Mura represents an outstanding interpretation of Rosso di Montalcino, a still red wine produced exclusively from Sangiovese grapes. Visually, it displays a bright ruby red colour, heralding a deep and fruity aromatic bouquet. On the nose, distinct notes of cherry and blackberry stand out, harmonised with elegant hints of tobacco and liquorice. On the palate, the enveloping structure is supported by a pleasant freshness, leading to a persistent and harmonious finish. It pairs magnificently with flavourful meats, game, and medium-aged cheeses.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the hillside vineyards surrounding the picturesque Poggio alle Mura castle, in the Siena area. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of over two hundred metres above sea level, cultivated using environmentally conscious agricultural practices. The soil, of Pliocene origin, is characterised by a sandy and silty composition, rich in limestone, marine sediments, and an abundant stony skeleton. This particular terroir allows for a clear expression of the grape variety, giving the wine a fluid and pleasantly spicy flavour profile.

How it is produced

The vinification process begins with temperature-controlled fermentation, carried out in Horizon hybrid vats that combine steel and wood. Maceration on the skins lasts for about ten days, ensuring optimal extraction of colour and aromas, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine then matures for twelve months in French oak barrels, during which it develops softness and complexity. An appropriate final resting period refines the sensory profile, ensuring a sip with perfect structural balance.

History and Curiosities

The vinification takes place in Horizon hybrid vats, merging the benefits of both steel and wood. Founded in 1978 by the vision of Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani, Banfi represents a marriage of winemaking passion and technological innovation. Through collaboration with Ezio Rivella, one of Italy's most eminent winemakers, the land purchased in Montalcino was transformed into a crucible of quality and potential. The acquisition of the historic Piedmontese winery Bruzzone subsequently further enriched the portfolio, integrating the sparkling wine tradition of Piedmont into the Banfi world.

Always pioneers, we value research and people, respecting the territories in which we work. For a better wine world. We see a global and connected world, where differences are wealth. The products of our land, to be defended and enhanced, are the best expression of human labor and ingenuity.
