Description

What kind of wine is it

Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura Riserva is a Tuscan red wine by Banfi, a true expression of the Brunello di Montalcino area. Made from Sangiovese grapes, it reveals a deep ruby colour with garnet highlights. The bouquet is broad, characterised by notes of plum jam, coffee and cocoa, enriched with a balsamic touch. On the palate, it displays a powerful structure, wrapped in mature and gentle tannins that provide a velvety and harmonious sip.

Where does it come from

It comes from Tuscany, in the Montalcino area, from hillside vineyards surrounding the historic Castello di Poggio alle Mura. The vines grow at an altitude of about 210-220 metres, encouraging remarkable aromatic concentration. The franco-sandy soils, of calcareous origin and yellowish-brown in colour, rest on Pliocene marine sediments. The presence of rounded stones ensures optimal drainage, giving the wine its typical solid framework and well-defined tannins.

How is it produced

Vinification begins with a maceration of 12-14 days. Alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature takes place in Horizon hybrid vats, which combine steel and wood to optimise aromatic extraction. Ageing continues for two years in French oak barrels and large casks, a choice designed to integrate tannins and structure in a balanced way. The wine then rests for twelve months in the bottle before being released to the market.

History and Curiosities

Born from the passion of the Mariani brothers, this exclusive Brunello di Montalcino DOCG derives its prestige from the hillside vineyards of Castello di Poggio alle Mura. The 2015 vintage, awarded 97 points by James Suckling, guarantees an extraordinary longevity of 15-25 years. Thanks to the lengthy ageing in French oak, the wine expresses mature tannins and a velvety power. Just one hour of decanting is enough to unleash the harmonious texture of this Tuscan masterpiece, offering a memorable tasting experience.

Founded in 1978 by the vision of Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani, Banfi represents a marriage of winemaking passion and technological innovation. Through collaboration with Ezio Rivella, one of Italy's most eminent winemakers, the land purchased in Montalcino was transformed into a crucible of quality and potential. The acquisition of the historic Piedmontese winery Bruzzone subsequently further enriched the portfolio, integrating the sparkling wine tradition of Piedmont into the Banfi world.

Always pioneers, we value research and people, respecting the territories in which we work. For a better wine world. We see a global and connected world, where differences are wealth. The products of our land, to be defended and enhanced, are the best expression of human labor and ingenuity.
