Description
What kind of wine it is
I Sodi di San Niccolò is a red wine from Tuscany produced by Castellare di Castellina. Made from a blend of Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera, it reveals a structured character. In the glass, it displays an intense ruby colour with garnet highlights. The bouquet stands out for its aromatic concentration, where notes of ripe red fruit, jam, spices, vanilla and liquorice blend together. On the palate, it expresses a dense and elegant texture, where natural freshness accompanies sweet tannins towards a long and persistent finish, ideal paired with roasts and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This red is born in Castellina in Chianti, in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. The grapes come from four hillside estates located at around 400 metres above sea level. The presence of typical calcareous soil imparts freshness and a rigorous tannic precision. The name of the cuvée pays homage to the landscape: the “sodi” are the steep and tough lands that require entirely manual work, situated near the fourteenth-century church that identifies the most renowned winegrowing area for the impeccable ripening of the fruit.
How it is produced
The harvest takes place in mid-October. Once fermentation in steel is complete, the wine matures for thirty months in partly new barrels. This skilful use of wood enhances the aromatic complexity and encourages the integration of the fruit. This is followed by twelve months of bottle ageing. The careful vinification ensures a dense and enveloping sip, giving the wine a marked potential longevity that will allow it to retain its finesse for years to come.
History and Curiosities
Created in 1977, I Sodi di San Niccolò is the historic Supertuscan that represents the excellence of Castellare di Castellina. This renowned red takes its name from the rugged lands (“sodi”), painstakingly worked by hand, and from the ancient fourteenth-century church that overlooks the estates in the heart of Chianti Classico. A true symbol of sustainable viticulture, represented by the iconic little bird on the label, the 2021 vintage boasts prestigious accolades such as 97 points from Decanter, confirming itself as an oenological masterpiece ideal for enriching the cellars of the greatest collectors.
