Description
What kind of wine it is
The Chianti Classico from Castellare di Castellina is a still red wine that embodies the authentic essence of the Tuscan region. This elegant blend is created from the union of Sangiovese and Canaiolo grapes. To the eye, it displays a bright ruby red colour with purplish highlights. The bouquet, fragrant and clear, offers notes of red fruit and blackcurrant, enriched by floral hints, liquorice, spices, and a delicate touch of vanilla. On the palate, it is rounded and smooth, supported by harmonious tannins and an acidity that provides a pleasant freshness. The clean finish makes it ideal to pair with structured dishes, stewed meats, and medium-aged cheeses.
Where it comes from
The vines grow in the Castellina in Chianti subzone, the historic heart of the denomination. The vineyards stretch across hills situated between 350 and 400 metres above sea level, in a bright exposure. The marked temperature variations ensure excellent ripening, while the limestone and sandy soils guarantee great balance on the palate. The area boasts an ancient winemaking tradition, with roots dating back to Etruscan and Roman times. In the 1200s, these very hills saw the birth of the historic Chianti League, a legacy that still shapes the distinctive style of the local wine today.
How it is produced
The winery exclusively values native grape varieties, excluding international ones to protect the typical expression of Sangiovese. In the vineyard, the vines are trained using the double inverted Guyot system. After the harvest, which takes place in October, the must undergoes fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature, also completing malolactic fermentation. Ageing takes place for seven months in French oak barrels, an essential phase to enrich the body and balance the structure. The process concludes with a further seven months of rest in the bottle, allowing the wine to achieve lasting elegance.
History and Curiosities
The Chianti Classico DOCG from Castellare di Castellina celebrates Tuscan tradition and the historic Chianti League. Grown at altitudes between 350 and 409 metres on calcareous and sandy soils, the vines are trained using the traditional double inverted Guyot system. By avoiding the use of international grape varieties, the winery enhances the authenticity of Sangiovese and Canaiolo, creating a wine aged for seven months in French oak barriques. The result is an elegant glass, characterised by harmonious tannins and delicate notes of red fruit.
