Description
What kind of wine it is
Lamaione is a full-bodied red wine by Frescobaldi, made from Merlot grapes. In the glass, it displays a rich texture, revealing a smooth and rounded profile that pleasantly envelops the palate. The aromatic bouquet opens with intense notes of ripe red and black berries, enhanced by elegant hints of vanilla, cocoa, dark chocolate and tobacco. On the palate, it reveals dense and silky tannins, perfectly balanced with a vibrant freshness that brings dynamism to the tasting, leading to a long and persistent finish with spicy undertones.
Where it comes from
This excellence originates in Tuscany, in the heart of Montalcino, within the prestigious vineyards of Tenuta Castelgiocondo. The vines sink their roots into marine clay soils, a unique feature of the area that gives the wine its unmistakable structural character. The vineyards, situated at around three hundred metres above sea level with an optimal south-west exposure, enjoy ideal conditions to ensure a complete and harmonious ripening of the fruit. The estate boasts a history dating back to the fourteenth century, bearing witness to the centuries-old winemaking tradition of these lands.
How it is produced
The creation of Lamaione begins with a meticulous manual harvest, followed by a careful selection of the grapes in the cellar. The process continues with fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, an essential step to preserve the purity of the primary aromas. Subsequently, the wine matures for a long period in French oak barrels, completing its evolution with further ageing in glass. The result is a glass with an intense ruby colour enriched by deep and brilliant purple hues.
History and Curiosities
The Castelgiocondo Estate of the Frescobaldi family is located in Montalcino, in a medieval village dating back to 1300. In the 1970s, a bold challenge led to the planting of the first Merlot vines on unusual marine clays. From this intuition, in 1991, Lamaione was born, a proud “lone knight” of this land. The 2021 vintage enhances a centuries-old legacy with prestigious accolades: the 5 Grappoli from Bibenda and the excellent scores of 94/100 from James Suckling and 92/100 from Vinous confirm the absolute prestige of a label capable of stirring emotions.

The village of Castelgiocondo dominates from above the historic Frescobaldi estate in Montalcino, an ancient stronghold built in 1100 to defend the road from the sea to Siena. The property is one of the first four from which the production of Brunello di Montalcino began in 1800.
The historical importance of the estate is testified by the knight figure shown on Castelgiocondo wine labels, taken from a famous fresco by the Sienese painter Simone Martini. The artist painted Guidoriccio da Fogliano, commander of Siena's troops, who led the attack on the castle of Montemassi. A historical coincidence that saw the Frescobaldi family begin their centuries-long adventure in the world of wine at the same time as the knight's exploits. Read more
