Description

What kind of wine it is

This still red wine expresses the most authentic characteristics of Sangiovese, a grape variety carefully cultivated by Casanova di Neri. Its intense and vibrant red colour is followed by a deep aromatic profile, centred on clear notes of cherry and blueberry. On the palate, it is round and generous, offering an enveloping sip supported by soft and velvety tannins, which lead the tasting towards a persistent and balanced finish.

Where it comes from

The grapes are grown in Montalcino and give rise to a faithful expression of Rosso di Montalcino. Casanova di Neri manages its vineyards with meticulous attention to the balance of the vines, enhancing the unique terroir of Tuscany. The ideal soil and climate conditions allow for optimal ripening, resulting in a measured tannic structure and a pronounced continuity of flavour that reflect the strong connection with the natural environment.

How it is produced

The production process begins with manual harvesting, followed by bunch selection and optical sorting of the berries. The spontaneous fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in truncated conical oak vats at a controlled temperature, accompanied by maceration with punch-downs and pump-overs. Subsequently, the wine matures for fifteen months in oak barrels, developing a complex structure. To enhance its qualities, a brief decanting is recommended before serving, ideal when paired with game and mature cheeses.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 1971 in Montalcino, Casanova di Neri demonstrates its dedication through the Rosso di Montalcino DOC, a wine of sublime structure and elegance made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. This prestigious Magnum format encapsulates the fruits of vineyards tended with the same care reserved for the great Brunellos. From meticulous manual harvesting to spontaneous fermentation, and maturation in tonneaux for fifteen months, every step enhances a rounded and generous profile on the palate, enriched by seductive notes of cherry and velvety tannins.

Casanova di Neri was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri to embark on a great adventure. Passionate about wine, Neri had long dreamed of making a great Italian red, and although the long-established wine zone of Chianti Classico was just on his doorstep, it was remote Montalcino and its austere Sangiovese wines that fascinated him. In May 1971, he bought Podere Casanova, changed its name to Casanova di Neri, and in consultation with some of Tuscany’s leading winemakers, immediately began work to restore the estate’s existing Sangiovese vines and plant new ones. In 1991 Giovanni Neri dies. His son Giacomo takes over the running of the winery.

In 2017 Casanova di Neri expands into hospitality with the inauguration of the Relais, a charming ten-room restored farmhouse amidst the vineyards, just steps from the winery. In the same year, Gianlorenzo Neri enters the family business alongside his father Giacomo and brother Giovanni.

This Tuscan red in Magnum format enhances convivial occasions, pairing wonderfully with pasta dishes with ragù, pork and game meats. Its roundness, characterised by soft tannins, also makes it an ideal match for cheeses. To fully appreciate its generous profile, a brief decanting of one hour is recommended, and it should be served at a slightly cool temperature.
