Description

What kind of wine it is

Giovanni Neri Rosso di Montalcino is a still red wine that clearly and precisely expresses the character of Sangiovese. On the nose, it offers a deep aromatic profile, with prominent aromas of cherry, blackcurrant and raspberry, enriched by hints of rose petals, leather and aromatic herbs. On the palate, the wine is round and generous, supported by a pleasant mineral savouriness and a fresh, vibrant acidity. The fine-grained tannins are soft and velvety, accompanying the sip towards a juicy finish of excellent balance.

Where it comes from

This expression originates in Tuscany, coming from the eponymous cru Giovanni Neri. The Rosso di Montalcino defines the roots of this wine, deeply connected to its territory and cared for by the Casanova di Neri winery. The estate applies a rigorous selection in its vineyards to ensure precise expressive consistency. With a limited production, this project enhances the local winemaking vocation, offering a tasting experience that faithfully reflects the environment and soil from which it originates.

How it is produced

The manual harvest begins with careful sorting, followed by a rigorous optical selection of the grapes. The must undergoes a spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, including a small proportion of whole bunches. Maceration takes place in truncated conical oak vats at a controlled temperature, using punching down and pumping over for measured extraction. The wine then rests in large oak barrels for fifteen months: this long ageing allows the wine to evolve, defining an elegant tannic structure that supports a harmonious and persistent tasting experience.

History and Curiosities

Originating from the single-vineyard cru Giovanni Neri, this wine embodies the excellence of Casanova di Neri, a family-run winery founded in 1971. Produced in a limited edition of around 6,000 bottles per year, the esteemed Rosso di Montalcino DOC receives the same meticulous care as the winery's renowned Brunello. The 2022 vintage bears witness to this dedication with prestigious accolades, earning 93 points from James Suckling and 91 from Robert Parker. A glass of pure elegance that pays tribute to the renowned Tuscan terroir.

Casanova di Neri was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri to embark on a great adventure. Passionate about wine, Neri had long dreamed of making a great Italian red, and although the long-established wine zone of Chianti Classico was just on his doorstep, it was remote Montalcino and its austere Sangiovese wines that fascinated him. In May 1971, he bought Podere Casanova, changed its name to Casanova di Neri, and in consultation with some of Tuscany’s leading winemakers, immediately began work to restore the estate’s existing Sangiovese vines and plant new ones. In 1991 Giovanni Neri dies. His son Giacomo takes over the running of the winery.

In 2017 Casanova di Neri expands into hospitality with the inauguration of the Relais, a charming ten-room restored farmhouse amidst the vineyards, just steps from the winery. In the same year, Gianlorenzo Neri enters the family business alongside his father Giacomo and brother Giovanni.
