Description

What kind of wine it is

Casanova di Neri Brunello Montalcino Giovanni Neri is a still red wine that expresses the authentic character of Tuscan Sangiovese. It presents a bright, vivid red colour, hinting at a structured aromatic profile. On the nose, it offers aromas of blueberries, cherries and plums, accompanied by a note of blood orange that emerges with aeration. The palate is characterised by a texture of very fine and creamy tannins, supported by well-integrated acidity, finishing with a deep, lingering aftertaste.

Where it comes from

This red originates from the hills of Tuscany, specifically in the Montalcino area, a renowned zone for the production of the famous Brunello di Montalcino. The Casanova di Neri winery cultivates these grapes in old vineyards over half a century old, rooted in soils with privileged sun exposure. The wine is created as a tribute to the founder, enhancing the territorial identity through meticulous care at every stage of cultivation, delivering in the glass a perfect harmony between structure and generosity.

How it is produced

The production process begins with a rigorous manual harvest and careful selection of the bunches. Fermentation starts spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and the use of whole bunches, followed by a twenty-nine day maceration in truncated wooden vats at controlled temperature. Ageing involves thirty months of rest in barrels, completed by a further eighteen months in bottle. At the table, this great red elegantly accompanies red meat and game dishes, mature cheeses and pasta with ragù.

History and Curiosities

The Brunello di Montalcino DOCG “Giovanni Neri” 2021 pays tribute to the founder of the winery, which has been operating since 1971. Made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes from old vines over half a century old, this red wine combines family tradition with ongoing innovation. Vinified with indigenous yeasts and aged for 30 months in barrels, it reveals intense aromas of cherry, blueberry and blood orange. On the palate, it enchants with creamy, expansive tannins, perfectly balanced acidity and a profound finish: extraordinary qualities that earned it 98 points from James Suckling.

Casanova di Neri was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri to embark on a great adventure. Passionate about wine, Neri had long dreamed of making a great Italian red, and although the long-established wine zone of Chianti Classico was just on his doorstep, it was remote Montalcino and its austere Sangiovese wines that fascinated him. In May 1971, he bought Podere Casanova, changed its name to Casanova di Neri, and in consultation with some of Tuscany’s leading winemakers, immediately began work to restore the estate’s existing Sangiovese vines and plant new ones. In 1991 Giovanni Neri dies. His son Giacomo takes over the running of the winery.

In 2017 Casanova di Neri expands into hospitality with the inauguration of the Relais, a charming ten-room restored farmhouse amidst the vineyards, just steps from the winery. In the same year, Gianlorenzo Neri enters the family business alongside his father Giacomo and brother Giovanni.
