Description

What kind of wine it is

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva by Capanna is a still wine that purely expresses the essence of Sangiovese. Characterised by a vibrant ruby colour with garnet highlights, it reveals a layered bouquet with notes of red fruits, jam, liquorice and hints of sweet tobacco. On the palate, it displays a vigorous acid-tannic structure, where dense, well-shaped tannins balance the softer elements of the sip. Tasting offers a persistent finish, marked by a fresh citrus vein and an intriguing mineral savouriness, ideal characteristics for pairing with rich game ragù and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This Riserva originates from the cool slope of Montosoli, located in the northern area of Montalcino. The favourable temperatures of this particular hillside ensure the grapes retain vital acidity, guaranteeing a profound balance between aromatic richness and flavour persistence. The identity of this Brunello di Montalcino is closely linked to the meticulous work of Capanna, dedicated to tending these vineyards since 1958. This distinct territorial imprint translates in the glass into a broad and firm sip, enriched by elegant earthy notes and an extraordinary ageing potential.

How it is produced

The vinification process begins with temperature-controlled fermentation, accompanied by a prolonged maceration on the skins to extract the best polyphenolic structure. Afterwards, the wine matures through a slow and patient ageing in Slavonian oak barrels for over four years. This extended period in large casks smooths the tannin profile, giving the red stability and a fine integration of its components. To fully appreciate every aromatic nuance, it is recommended to decant for about an hour before serving.

History and Curiosities

Born from the historic dedication of the Cencioni family on the cool slopes of Montosoli, the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva from Capanna has embodied Tuscan winemaking excellence since 1958. This prestigious red comes to life through a traditional approach led by oenologist Amedeo Cencioni, enhanced by a majestic maturation in Slavonian oak barrels for over four years. The 2019 vintage, widely acclaimed by international critics, guarantees extraordinary longevity, promising a superb and rewarding evolution of flavour until 2036.

Capanna winery, owned by the Cencioni family since 1957, founded by Giuseppe Cencioni, together with his sons Benito and Franco, is located in the Montosoli area, north of Montalcino.

Already in the 60s the family began to bottle their wines and, after the DOC recognition of Brunello di Montalcino in 1966, Giuseppe was one of the 25 founders of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino.

The production, initially of a few thousand bottles, has subsequently increased with the planting of new vineyards up to the current 25 hectares.

Capanna has always been run exclusively at a family level. Today it is in the hands of Patrizio and Amedeo, representatives of the third and fourth generation who personally take care of the oenological and agronomic part of the cellar. Capanna has always maintained a production style in line with the tradition, handed down from generation to generation.

Its complex structure brings out the best in lamb, mushroom-based dishes, and mature cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano. Also ideal as a meditation wine, it is recommended to decant it for 30-60 minutes and serve at 18-20°C.
