Description
What kind of wine it is
Roccafiore Montefalco Sagrantino is a still red wine that embodies the most authentic soul of Umbria, made exclusively from Sagrantino grapes. A key part of the Montefalco Sagrantino area, it stands out for its robust structure and extraordinary longevity in the bottle. On the palate, it is enveloping and powerful, with a weave of elegant tannins balanced by a pleasant acidity. The finish is long and persistent, offering refined notes of dark chocolate and ripe fruit.
Where it comes from
The Roccafiore vineyards are located in the province of Perugia, in the heart of the renowned Montefalco region. The rows, trained using the spurred cordon method with optimal south-west exposure, are managed according to organic farming principles. The roots penetrate white clay soils enriched with limestone infiltrations, which give the wine a pronounced minerality and a solid structural base. The low yields allow the aromatic profile of the grape variety to be concentrated, fully enhancing the identity of the terroir.
How it is produced
This vegan wine is made from hand-harvested grapes picked in October, followed by gentle pressing and about ten days of maceration on the skins. Spontaneous fermentation, triggered by indigenous yeasts, takes place in temperature-controlled steel vats and includes malolactic fermentation. The wine then matures for thirty months in large Slavonian oak barrels, resting for a further six months before release. The bouquet weaves together notes of blackberry, spices, anise and dried mushrooms. It is ideal for accompanying pink meats, soft cheeses and flavourful roasted fish dishes.
History and Curiosities
Founded in Todi in 2000, Cantina Roccafiore tells the story of Umbria through genuine agricultural sustainability. The Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG 2020, overseen by Alessandro Biancolin, is the result of meticulous manual harvesting and spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Thanks to careful ageing for 30 months in Slavonian oak barrels, this organic and vegan wine develops elegant tannins, intense blackberry notes and a powerful structure. An outstanding wine awarded 90 points by Vinous, ideal for long ageing in the bottle.

Respect for the locations is expressed in the exaltation of the unique facets of the native vines that have been grown here for centuries. This requires commitment, technique and knowledge, resulting in the production of wines bearing an unmistakable style and identity, in which the bold choices, patience and attention are distilled. This is to underline that Roccafiore does not pursue innovation as means to an end but rather as the realisation of visions and objectives that Leonardo and Luca seek to faithfully convey in their wines.
