Description
What kind of wine it is
This dry white is an authentic expression of the region, made from Chardonnay grapes. Produced by Kaltern, it stands out for its full and bold style, while maintaining a fresh and lively character. In the glass, it displays a straw yellow colour that hints at a fruity aromatic profile, with prominent notes of Williams pear and white flowers. On the palate, the Chardonnay reveals a marked minerality and an enveloping structure, offering a long and persistent finish.
Where it comes from
The grapes for this label are grown in the hillside vineyards surrounding Lake Caldaro, situated between 350 and 450 metres above sea level. The slopes, facing south and east, benefit from a mild climate and around three hundred days of sunshine per year, ensuring optimal ripening. The soils are characterised by a clay and limestone matrix, well-drained and able to retain heat, giving the wine its distinctive savoury character. This historic area of South Tyrol fully enhances the varietal characteristics, allowing for a defined structure and a clear freshness from the very first sip.
How it is produced
Production begins with a rigorous manual harvest of the bunches, selected at perfect ripeness. In the winery, the whole grapes are pressed, followed by fermentation at a controlled temperature, which is essential to preserve the purity of the varietal aromas. Afterwards, the wine undergoes maturation in steel for about three months in direct contact with the fine lees. This resting period gives greater volume and complexity to the palate, while maintaining the natural liveliness of the fruit and aromatic clarity.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1900, the Kaltern Caldaro winery brings together the dedication of 650 families committed to cultivating beautiful vineyards around Lake Caldaro. In South Tyrol, Chardonnay boasts a history spanning 150 years, although in the past it was often mistaken for Pinot Bianco due to their great similarity. Under the guidance of oenologist Thomas Scarizuola, the grapes ripen in a terroir blessed with 300 days of sunshine a year, resulting in an outstanding wine from the Klassik Line. Sustainable production is certified by the FAIR’N GREEN certification.
