Description
What kind of wine it is
Caccia al Piano Bolgheri Superiore is a still red wine from Tuscany that harmoniously combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. It stands out for its structured and elegant style, supported by very fine tannins and a persistent finish. On the nose, it reveals clear scents of ripe dark fruits such as cherry, blackcurrant and blueberry, accompanied by notes of tobacco and aromatic herbs. This blend impresses with its intense ruby red colour and an austere and dense palate, offering a harmonious and prolonged tasting experience.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the renowned Bolgheri area, using the finest grapes grown within the San Biagio vineyard. The rows, situated at around two hundred metres above sea level, benefit from hot, dry summers—ideal conditions to ensure regular ripening of the grapes. Such a climate promotes excellent structural balance and remarkable aromatic concentration. Harvesting is carried out in distinct stages for each variety, respecting their physiological development to best enhance the qualities of the cru.
How it is produced
Production begins with a manual harvest, followed by careful selection of the berries on the sorting table. The varieties ferment separately at controlled temperatures in steel vats and wooden tanks. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels of varying toasts. Once the blend is created, the wine rests further in wood before the crucial bottle ageing, a necessary step to achieve maximum expressive harmony.
History and Curiosities
Born from Franco Ziliani's passion for the great Tuscan reds, this prestigious wine is crafted from the prized grapes of the San Biagio cru. A hot and dry summer favoured a manual harvest of excellent quality, enhancing the elegance of the terroir. The expert ageing in French oak barriques, combined with subsequent bottle maturation, gives the wine a dense structure and extraordinary harmony, characterised by extremely fine tannins. The excellence of this vintage is confirmed by the 95 points from James Suckling, attesting to a masterpiece with magnificent ageing potential.

This idea, which culminated with purchasing the Caccia al Piano estate in 2003, came across after visiting the San Biagio vineyard. This marvellous area enjoys a privileged position in the Bolgheri area and a fascinating view of the sea.
Since the beginning, Franco Ziliani's work was driven by the desire to patiently understand the terroir of Bolgheri, respecting what has already been done by the great protagonists who have made the wine of these lands famous. Today, the company is carried on by his children Cristina, Arturo and Paolo.
The Caccia al Piano estate is located in Castagneto Carducci in the town of Bolgheri and was created from the renovation of an ancient hunting estate owned by the noble Della Gherardesca family, dating back to 1868. Thanks to careful redevelopment work in full respect of the surrounding land, the farmhouse has been enlarged and transformed into the current headquarters of the winery. Read more
