Description
What kind of wine it is
Boschendal 1685 Shiraz is an elegant South African red wine that highlights the intensity of Shiraz. On the nose, it reveals deep hints of blackberry, cherry and plum, enriched by cloves and a distinctive touch of white pepper. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich and juicy, with a fruity core wrapped in silky tannins that accompany its lingering finish. Thanks to its complex structure, it pairs beautifully with grilled meats, roast lamb and mature cheeses. Decanting for about an hour is recommended to fully appreciate its nuances.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the majestic Drakenstein Valley, located at the gateway to the Franschhoek Valley, within South Africa's Coastal Region. This area, protected by imposing mountain ranges, enjoys a particular cool microclimate that enhances the elegance of the sip and the refined peppery notes. The Boschendal estate is a winemaking reference deeply rooted in the territory, where the vineyards thrive in harmony with an integrated agricultural ecosystem. This natural environment enhances the development of intense dark fruit aromas, while preserving the lively freshness typical of the area.
How it is produced
After a careful manual harvest, the grapes undergo meticulous selection to ensure only perfectly healthy berries are used. Fermentation takes place partly in open steel tanks, where manual punch-downs and gentle pump-overs optimise the extraction of colour and structure. Afterwards, the wine matures for a period of twelve to fourteen months in French oak barrels, both new and previously used. This ageing process softens the wine's texture, allowing the precious spicy notes from the wood to integrate harmoniously.
