Description

What kind of wine is it

Blain Gagnard Volnay Champans 1er Cru is a still red wine that precisely interprets the character of Burgundy, produced by the Blain-Gagnard winery from Pinot Noir grapes. In the glass, it reveals a vivid ruby red colour, a prelude to a layered aromatic profile where floral notes intertwine with hints of blackberry and blackcurrant, enriched by nuances of tobacco and liquorice. On the palate, it is austere and balanced, supported by concentrated tannins that define the structure and lead to a persistent finish that is compact and deep.

Where does it come from

This wine originates in France, at the heart of the prestigious Volnay Premier Cru appellation. In the Champans vineyard, the soil is characterised by a high presence of limestone, a key factor that gives the sip tension and great aromatic clarity. Under the guidance of oenologist Jean-Marc Blain, the essence of the terroir is translated into a profile of linear charm. At the table, it expresses itself best alongside dishes of roast game, duck breast, and intense truffle or mushroom-based preparations.

How is it produced

The processing of Pinot Noir aims to favour a structure designed to stand the test of time, endowing this red with remarkable ageing potential, estimated between ten and fifteen years. To capture every aromatic nuance and savour its perfect tannic texture, it is ideal to serve the wine at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. It is also recommended to allow for a one-hour decanting before serving, enabling the bouquet to fully open and provide a balanced tasting experience.

History and Curiosities

An expression of the renowned AOC Volnay Premier Cru, this pure Pinot Noir from Blain-Gagnard encapsulates the most authentic elegance of Burgundy. Born from the oenological vision of Jean-Marc Blain, the wine reveals a vibrant ruby colour and a sophisticated bouquet intertwining floral notes, blackberry, tobacco, and delicate spicy nuances. On the palate, it expresses an austere character, where the concentrated tannins provide a solid structural framework, culminating in a persistent and memorable finish. It boasts a remarkable ageing potential of 10-15 years.

Domaine Blain-Gagnard was formed in 1980 when Jean-Marc Blain (a Sancerrois) married Claudine Gagnard, youngest daughter of Jacques and Marie-Josèphe Gagnard of Domaine Gagnard-Delagrange. The couple runs this venerable domaine with the help of their son Marc-Antonin. Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard met while they were both studying oenology at Dijon. The estate's vineyards come mainly from grandparents and other relatives of Claudine, along with a few purchases. The vines are planted in Chardonnay (55%) and the rest in Pinot Noir, with a small parcel of Passetoutgrain. Read more
