Description

What kind of wine it is

Bellingham The Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc is a still white wine that captures the essence of the Western Cape region. Made exclusively from Chenin Blanc grapes, it offers a vibrant profile with tropical fruit notes and delicate hints of honey. On the palate, it is enveloping, with a full body and a powerful yet balanced sip. Tasting the Chenin Blanc reveals a subtle oak spiciness that leads to a long, fresh finish, characterised by a distinctive phenolic texture.

Where it comes from

The wine originates in the Western Cape, South Africa, through a careful blend of grapes from Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Darling. Bellingham dedicates this prestigious label to Bernard Podlashuk, selecting fruit from old bush vines over forty years old. The vineyard is managed according to organic farming principles to protect the environment. The low yields ensure a profound expression of the terroir, outlining a structured profile that retains a pronounced acidity.

How it is produced

Hand harvesting ensures the highest quality bunches, vinified with a minimal intervention philosophy. Fermentation and the initial ageing phase take place in large barrels, amphorae and concrete eggs, a combination that preserves the purity of the fruit while adding depth. The wine then rests in French oak barrels for nine months, developing elegant spicy notes. This process produces a white wine of great structure, ideal for refined food pairings with oily fish, mature cheeses and white meats.

History and Curiosities

Produced at the historic South African estate Bellingham, founded in 1693, this precious limited edition from the “The Bernard Series” collection celebrates the founder Bernard Podlashuk. The wine is made from Chenin Blanc grapes, meticulously hand-picked from old bush vines over forty years old, located in the Western Cape region. Thanks to artisanal vinification in large barrels, amphorae and concrete, followed by nine months of ageing in French oak, this award-winning label expresses on the palate all the opulent energy of the South African terroir.

From this winery
  • Start up year: 1693
The Bellingham story starts in 1693 when Hollander Gerrit Janz van Vuuren and his French Huguenot wife planted the first 1000 vines on the estate, then known as Bellinchamp (‘pretty fields’). It then passed from family to family until 1943, when Bernard and Fredagh Podlashuk purchased the somewhat derelict farm, set about restoring the manor house, gardens and vineyards and effectively pioneered the modern renaissance of the Bellingham Estate in Franschhoek.

The Podlashuks replanted the farm to vineyards and travelled to France and Germany to do extensive wine research. Upon return, they buckled down and released the Cape’s first rosé in 1949, followed in quick succession by the Premier Grand Cru in 1951 and the first single varietal Shiraz in 1956.

The 80s and 90s saw vineyard developments, cellar extensions and the beginning of Bellingham’s classic New World winemaking philosophy. Today, while still inspired by its history of innovation, ingenuity and foresight, the brand is firmly set in the 21st century, producing contemporary, structured wines with an unmistakable sense of place and style.
