Description
What kind of wine it is
The Bellingham Homestead Series Pinotage is a still red wine that faithfully expresses the essence of the grape variety. To the eye, it displays a deep, dark red colour, enhanced by bright ruby highlights. The aromatic bouquet is intense, characterised by notes of plum, mulberry, raspberry and black cherry. On the palate, this full-bodied wine reveals a harmonious interplay of sweet spices, vanilla and cardamom. The soft tannins guide the sip towards a long and vibrant finish. Awarded 91 points by Robert Parker, it offers a structured and satisfying sensory experience.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in the coastal region of Stellenbosch, a renowned wine district in South Africa. The vineyards are cultivated using the bush vine system, which encourages the development of small berries and excellent aromatic concentration. Produced by Bellingham, a historic estate founded in 1693, it faithfully enhances the unmistakable identity of the region.
How it is produced
The winemaking process involves careful ageing in barrels, aimed at enriching the spicy profile without overpowering the fruit’s identity. This production choice ensures excellent ageing potential over time. To best appreciate its nuances, it is recommended to serve at a temperature of 16-18°C, after decanting for about an hour. Its enveloping texture makes it ideal for pairing with game and roast lamb, as well as braised ribs, mature cheeses and mushroom-based dishes.

The Podlashuks replanted the farm to vineyards and travelled to France and Germany to do extensive wine research. Upon return, they buckled down and released the Cape’s first rosé in 1949, followed in quick succession by the Premier Grand Cru in 1951 and the first single varietal Shiraz in 1956.
The 80s and 90s saw vineyard developments, cellar extensions and the beginning of Bellingham’s classic New World winemaking philosophy. Today, while still inspired by its history of innovation, ingenuity and foresight, the brand is firmly set in the 21st century, producing contemporary, structured wines with an unmistakable sense of place and style.
