Description
What kind of wine it is
Valtellina Superiore Valgella Sol di Barbacan is a still red wine produced in Lombardy, an authentic expression of the Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca) grape variety. In the glass, it displays a bright ruby red colour and an aromatic profile of red fruits with hints of liquorice. On the palate, it is lively and structured, ideal paired with pasta dishes with ragù, red meats, pork cuts and mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This red wine comes to life among the steep Alpine terraces of Valtellina, within the Valgella subzone, in the municipality of San Giacomo di Teglio. The vineyards are managed according to the strict principles of heroic viticulture, a manual approach to suit the landscape’s morphology. The winery preserves ancient native varieties, maintaining the territory’s ecosystem intact. The mountain climate and temperature variations favour optimal aromatic development of the grapes.
How it is produced
The transformation of the must takes place through spontaneous fermentations, triggered exclusively by indigenous yeasts, to enhance the wine’s purity and complexity. To fully appreciate its aromatic and flavour nuances, it is recommended to decant for about an hour before serving, bringing it to an ideal temperature between 14 and 16 degrees Celsius. It also demonstrates a remarkable aptitude for ageing, guaranteeing a maturation potential of 10-15 years.
History and Curiosities
Angelo Sega and his sons, the heart and soul of the Barbacan company, practise rigorous heroic viticulture on six hectares of Alpine terraces in San Giacomo di Teglio. As guardians of the Valtellina region, they cultivate Chiavennasca, the authentic expression of the local Nebbiolo. Their Valgella Sol comes to life thanks to spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts, an artisanal method that deeply respects the delicate mountain ecosystem. This commitment preserves native varieties, creating a still red wine with great ageing potential.
