Description
What kind of wine it is
Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura is an excellent Tuscan red wine made from Sangiovese grapes, a proud representative of the renowned Brunello di Montalcino area. It stands out for its powerful and defined body, beautifully balanced by sweet and gentle tannins. On the nose, the aromatic profile reveals notes of plum, cherry and blackberry jam, enriched by hints of vanilla and liquorice. Excellent paired with game, red meats and mature cheeses, it fully expresses its potential when served between 18 and 20°C after an hour of decanting.
Where it comes from
The vines are cultivated using organic and sustainable farming practices near the Castello di Poggio alle Mura. The rows, trained using the spurred cordon method on hills at around 210-220 metres above sea level, take root in sandy soils of marine origin and silty-loam soils dating back to the Pliocene era. This particular geological composition, combined with careful yield management, gives the wine elegant mauve reflections and an aromatic character with a distinct sense of place.
How it is produced
Fermentation and maceration take place over about 12-13 days in special combined steel and wood vats at a controlled temperature. The maturation process continues for two years, mainly in custom-made French oak barrels and, for the remainder, in Slavonian oak barrels. A further twelve months of ageing allows the tannins to soften, bringing the sensory profile to an ideal balance between vigour and smoothness.
History and Curiosities
The prestigious Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Poggio alle Mura originates from organically and sustainably cultivated vineyards that surround the historic Castello Banfi. This superb expression of pure Sangiovese is expertly aged for two years, mainly in elegant French oak barriques made to measure, before resting for a further twelve months in the bottle. The 2021 vintage embodies the perfect union of power and smoothness and, awarded 93 points by James Suckling, is confirmed as an undisputed masterpiece of Tuscan tradition.
