Description
What kind of wine it is
Alois Lageder Lagrein is a still red wine that authentically expresses the Alto Adige region. Made from Lagrein grapes grown according to biodynamic principles, it displays a cherry red colour with ruby highlights. On the palate, it offers a medium, juicy body, supported by a lively acidity that emphasises its elegance. The bouquet recalls plum and dark berries, enriched with spices, leather and subtle animal notes. The sip finishes with soft tannins and a long finish, characterised by the typical delicately bitter aftertaste.
Where it comes from
It originates from vineyards located in the Bolzano basin, on the banks of the Talvera stream, between 230 and 430 metres above sea level. The vines take root in sandy alluvial soils with a significant presence of gravel and porphyry. This geology, combined with a very warm microclimate, ensures sunny days ideal for the perfect ripening of the grapes, promoting a pronounced aromatic intensity. The deep connection between this native grape variety and its land of origin has been historically documented since 1370.
How it is produced
Production follows a nature-respecting approach. The grapes undergo alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in steel tanks for about fourteen days, defining the colour and stability of the aromatic profile. Maturation initially takes place in cement and steel vats for about twelve months. The structure evolves further thanks to ageing in large oak barrels for up to seventeen months, a stage that provides perfect integration of the tannins and a persistent freshness on the palate.
History and Curiosities
Documented as far back as 1370, Lagrein is a noble indigenous grape variety that embodies the essence of South Tyrol. Produced by the historic Alois Lageder winery according to the strict principles of biodynamic agriculture, this red wine comes to life on sandy alluvial soils in the warm basin of Bolzano. The meticulous ageing process, partly carried out in large oak barrels, gives the wine an elegant and juicy structure. On the palate, it releases intense notes of plum and spices, wrapped in velvety tannins that enhance its exceptional harmony and typically slightly bitter finish.
