Description
What kind of wine it is
La Poja by Allegrini is a still red wine that captures the pure essence of the Corvina grape variety in the Verona region. On the palate, it presents a full and structured profile, where a precise tannic texture harmonises with vibrant freshness. The sip reveals an elegant complexity with fruity notes of ripe morello cherry and spicy hints of white pepper. The sensory experience is enriched by delicate balsamic nuances and hints of iris, leading to a long, mineral finish of extraordinary persistence.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella, in the La Poja estate, a prestigious plot located at the top of the La Grola estate, near Fumane. In this corner of northern Valpolicella, the hills gently slope towards Lake Garda. The vineyards are situated at around 320 metres above sea level and benefit from optimal south-east exposure. The roots delve into mainly calcareous soils, rich in stones and white limestone rocks, with veins of clay and gypsum. This particular geological composition gives the wine its typical fresh and mineral character.
How it is produced
Production begins in October with meticulous manual harvesting, carried out while waiting for a slight over-ripening of the bunches on the vine. After destemming and crushing, the must ferments in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature for about twenty days, then naturally completes malolactic fermentation. The wine matures through a long period in Allier oak barrels, followed by further ageing in large Slavonian oak casks. The process concludes with essential bottle ageing, which defines an enveloping structure, characterised by impeccable tannins and remarkable persistence on the palate.
History and Curiosities
In 1979, Giovanni Allegrini chose to plant only Corvina grapes on the summit of the La Grola hill, in Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella. From this inspired decision was born the exclusive Podere La Poja, a magnificent 2.65-hectare vineyard situated at an altitude of 320 metres. Today, these precious old vines of over forty years give life to the flagship label of the historic Venetian winery, founded in 1854. An extraordinary wine that embodies the pure finesse of the region, celebrated in the 2019 vintage with the prestigious 95 points from James Suckling.

Belonging to the family of the same name since the 16th century, the Allegrini winery is located in the Valpolicella Classica area: in particular, it is situated where vines such as corvina, molinara and rondinella give life to what are considered some of the best red wines of the Peninsula. xtraWine offers numerous bottles of Allegrini Allegrini wines that stand out for their refinement and elegance, very pleasant and capable of enveloping you with every sip, conquering even the most demanding palates. This is due to continuous improvements in production such as the introduction of the use of barriques alongside the traditional large barrels, and even a reduction in the ageing period so as not to alter too much the quality of the grapes used.
Not only Valpolicella, on xtraWine you can find Allegrini wines such as Amarone, Valpolicella and Recioto. Read more
