Description

What kind of wine it is

Praepositus Gewürztraminer is a still white wine with a distinctly aromatic profile, crafted by Abbazia di Novacella. This expression of the grape variety stands out for its rich bouquet, featuring notes of yellow rose, elderflower, mandarin marmalade, thyme and lantana. On the palate, the sip is rounded and enveloping, supported by a pronounced mineral character that gives great persistence. Vinified entirely in stainless steel, this white wine preserves the freshness and varietal purity of Gewürztraminer. It is a wine of character, ideal for those seeking a clear floral profile and a significant, decisive structure.

Where it comes from

The wine originates from the areas of Bressanone and Varna, in the heart of South Tyrol. The vines grow on soils composed of silty-sandy gravel of morainic origin, a key factor in the pronounced minerality of the wine. The vineyard is managed using a high-density Guyot training system, with a low yield per hectare to maximise the definition of the aromas. The estate is one of the oldest wine-producing establishments in the world, where the meticulous artisan work handed down by the Augustinian canons merges with the authentic vocation of the mountain terroir of the Isarco Valley.

How it is produced

Harvesting takes place towards the end of October, ensuring an ideal level of ripeness for extracting the primary aromas. In the winery, the grapes undergo controlled fermentation, which is essential for preserving the most delicate aromas of Gewürztraminer. The vinification process and subsequent maturation take place entirely in steel tanks, enhancing the aromatic clarity without any interference. Finally, a three-month bottle ageing period allows the wine's components to integrate harmoniously, resulting in a rounded and lasting taste balance.

History and Curiosities

The Praepositus Gewürztraminer 2023 originates from the ancient Abbey of Novacella, recognised as one of the oldest wineries in the world. Managed by Augustinian canons, the estate preserves an authentic monastic tradition, founded on meticulous craftsmanship that enhances the moraine soils of Bressanone and Varna. This refined still white wine represents a harmonious blend of faith, culture, and oenological mastery, offering an exclusive sensory experience that celebrates the extraordinary historical heritage of a community devoted to excellence.

Novacella is the Northernmost wine-growing area in Italy. On the sunniest slopes surrounding the Abbey, fine vines have been producing white grapes for 8 centuries, which are vinified in the monastery cellar.

Also owned by the Abbey is a vineyard located in South Tyrol's main wine-growing area: the Marklhof estate in Cornaiano, on the 'wine road' near Bolzano. The sandy, dry soil and the airy climate of these hills make it possible to obtain excellent red wines, including a characteristic Kalterersee, a very fine Schiava and a very elegant Pinot Noir.

A third Novacella vineyard is located in Bolzano, around the ancient and tiny St. Mary's Monastery. Here, in the dry and very warm climate of the valley floor, a full-bodied dark Lagrein matures, which is particularly suitable for ageing.

In our wine cellar, the grapes from these three vineyards are raised to wines whose distinct character and quality has been rewarded by the loyalty of generations of friends and connoisseurs.
