Description
What kind of wine it is
Riesling Abbazia di Novacella is a still, semi-aromatic white wine that faithfully reflects the Alto Adige region. Made from Riesling grapes grown in the Isarco Valley, it stands out for its elegant profile, supported by lively acidity. Maturation in steel enhances its purity: on the nose, it offers a refined citrus and vegetal bouquet, enriched with hints of jasmine and wisteria. On the palate, it is dry, smooth and persistent, with pronounced notes of citron and lime leading to a savoury, almost salty finish.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown in historic vineyards near the Abbey of Novacella, in the picturesque Bressanone Basin. The rows stretch across sunny slopes between 650 and 900 metres above sea level, benefiting from an alpine climate with significant temperature variations that enhance the aromatic intensity of the grapes. The roots penetrate permeable moraine soils, rich in quartzite, mica schist and paragneiss. This unique geological composition gives the wine a pronounced mineral texture and a distinct, profound freshness.
How it is produced
The vines are cultivated using the Guyot system, ensuring strict yield control. After harvesting, the must ferments and then matures in stainless steel, avoiding the use of wood to preserve the integrity of the fruit and the natural varietal freshness. In the glass, it appears straw yellow with slight greenish reflections. Over time, the bouquet evolves towards elegant notes of white-fleshed peach. The structure remains dry and juicy, ensuring a fine finish and excellent ageing potential over the years.
History and Curiosities
Produced by the Abbey of Novacella, founded in 1142, this noble Riesling encapsulates the most authentic essence of the Isarco Valley. On the sunny slopes of the Bressanone Basin, between 650 and 800 metres above sea level, the vines have thrived for over eight centuries, cultivated according to a skilful monastic tradition. The roots delve into moraine deposits rich in quartzite, mica schist and paragneiss, binding the history of the land to a distinctive identity. This fascinating expression of Alto Adige DOC celebrates a winemaking tradition preserved intact over time.

Also owned by the Abbey is a vineyard located in South Tyrol's main wine-growing area: the Marklhof estate in Cornaiano, on the 'wine road' near Bolzano. The sandy, dry soil and the airy climate of these hills make it possible to obtain excellent red wines, including a characteristic Kalterersee, a very fine Schiava and a very elegant Pinot Noir.
A third Novacella vineyard is located in Bolzano, around the ancient and tiny St. Mary's Monastery. Here, in the dry and very warm climate of the valley floor, a full-bodied dark Lagrein matures, which is particularly suitable for ageing.
In our wine cellar, the grapes from these three vineyards are raised to wines whose distinct character and quality has been rewarded by the loyalty of generations of friends and connoisseurs. Read more
