From this winery
  • Start up year: 1978
Gemma was founded in 1978 when Silvano Piacentini decided to found a new production facility in the Barolo production area, in the municipality of Serralunga d'Alba, inside an old winery formerly owned by the Opera Pia Barolo of the Falletti Marquises located in the historic center of the village close to the historic medieval castle (the premises are now completely renovated and equipped with modern winemaking equipment and a new barrels park).

_17In 2012, the company has a new and modern structure, built with innovative construction techniques where the entire production process is carried out, from winemaking to bottling and shipping, this facility is just a few kilometers away from the headquarters historical in via Alba 11 / C.

The Gemma company has a direct ownership of vineyards equal to about 25 hectares, distributed between several municipalities of the Langhe including Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, of which 65% represented by Nebbiolo da Barolo plants. In Serralunga d'Alba, the company leads vineyards in Cerrati and Collareto, while in Cru Giubellini is cultivated in Monforte d'Alba (hence the homonymous Barolo Giblin). Even the son of Silvano, Luigi, after various experiences in major Italian wineries, participates in the company's business dealing with the commercial and marketing side.

Since 1990, Giorgio Barbero has joined the company, oenologist, collaborator of the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Turin and chairman of a tasting commission at the certification body appointed by the Consortium of Protection, as well as wine consultant, with the task of supervising and developing all the activities concerning the agronomic and oenological part.
The company owns over 25 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Alba, La Morra, Monforte d'Alba, Roddi, Roddino, Serralunga and Sinio. Here we cultivate the classic Piedmont red grapes with which we produce wines with Controlled Denomination of Origin and Checked and Guaranteed famous all over the world.

The average age of Nebbiolo plants is 25-30 years, with density per hectare oscillating between 4500 and 5500 vines. The vineyards of Dolcetto are located in the municipality of Roddino (and more precisely in the renowned Madonna della Neve sub-area) and those from Barbera in the municipality of Alba (vineyard Bricco Angelini). Also owned by the company is a small white Rossese vineyard in the locality Giubellini - sub-zone of Monforte d'Alba where this ancient and late Piedmontese white-berry variety has managed to survive until today - from which a rare white wine is obtained, the Verdiana.
