Founded in 1859, the Gaja winery, which has always been known for its production of Barbaresco in particular, has been able to establish itself on the world wine scene thanks to the passion for wines of its founder, Angelo Gaja. Gaja wines have for decades not only represented the excellence of Piedmontese wines but have become a true hallmark of a Made in Italy product that is appreciated worldwide. Supported by his wife Lucia and children Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni, Angelo Gaja has been able to introduce the Gaja winery to the world, thanks to his constant commitment and innovative vision that have literally transformed not only Nebbiolo and Barbaresco wines, but the entire wine market in recent years. Located in the historic centre of Barbaresco, the Gaja winery produces white and red wines that have become cult objects for every wine lover. With around 92 hectares under vine, the company produces an average of 350 thousand bottles per year, equally distributed between whites and reds with a strong personality and elegance: it is no coincidence that the 1985 Barbaresco Gaja was defined by Wine Spectator as the best wine ever produced in Italy. In addition to being a historic name in the Italian wine scene, Gaja is an authentic ambassador that has contributed significantly to the international reputation of Italian oenology. Founded in Barbaresco in 1859, the Gaja estate owes its success to the visionary genius of Angelo Gaja.

The Vision of Angelo Gaja

Drawing on his profound knowledge of the terroir, Angelo Gaja carefully selected the most promising plots and managed the vineyards scrupulously, lowering yields to obtain more intense and aromatically concentrated wines. Innovation has also been applied to vinification, with delicate extractions that emphasise finesse and elegance. Experimentation with barriques and large barrels during ageing was conducted to enhance each individual terroir.

A Transnational Wine Journey

Gaja's philosophy has embraced elements of local traditions and winemaking practices from renowned regions. His curiosity drove him to broaden his scope, exploring new terroirs across the peninsula. In the 1990s, he founded the Ca' Marcanda winery in Bolgheri, producing classic Supertuscans with international grape varieties. The Pieve di Santa Restituta estate in Montalcino was acquired at the same time, revealing a constant commitment to expansion.

Etna and the New Adventure

The growing interest in the wines of Etna attracted Angelo Gaja, bringing him to the southern slope of the volcano. In collaboration with the Etnean producer Graci, he founded the Idda winery. This 20-hectare estate stretches between Biancavilla and Belpasso, at an altitude of 600-800 metres.
